Farfetch’s TokMode: A designer’s perspective on the future of online shopping

Imagine online shopping that’s as fun and engaging as a TikTok video, with the ability to try on clothes virtually using your own face. That’s the vision behind TokMode, a new eCommerce functionality concept created by designer Paul.

In a world where digital content is increasingly personalized and entertaining, traditional online shopping can feel outdated and linear. TokMode merges Farfetch and TikTok to create a new kind of shopping experience that’s both stylish and social.

In this article, Paul discusses his design process and how he created a functionality that combines the best of both worlds. He also shares his vision for the future of TokMode and how it can help businesses reach new customers and increase sales.

Let’s dive in!

The genesis of TokMode

TokMode combines the best of both worlds: the fashion-forwardness of Farfetch and the social interactivity of TikTok. You can browse through Farfetch’s vast selection of luxury brands, and then use TokMode’s virtual try-on feature to see how the clothes look on you. You can also create and share your own TokMode videos, where you can show off your personal style and inspire others.

The choice of Farfetch

To implement this groundbreaking concept, I chose Farfetch as the base application. Farfetch is a trendsetting clothing sales platform with a strong mobile app presence. This made it the ideal platform for integrating TikTok-like mechanics and creating a truly immersive shopping experience.

The TokMode experience

A quick tour to get started

Before you start exploring TokMode, take a quick tour to learn the basics. This will help you access personalized content and outfits, browse vintage clothing styles, try on your favorite items using a selfie, and buy them with just a few taps.

To access TokMode, simply tap the gradient icon in the main app.

A TikTok-style feed

The main page of TokMode mirrors the engaging aesthetics of TikTok. Users can seamlessly tap on products of interest to explore more or make an instant purchase. This all-in-one interface streamlines the shopping process.

Exploring categories

By clicking on the bottom-right button, users can access specific product categories and filter their searches based on brand, style, and preferences.

Dynamic clothing try-on

The heart of TokMode is its revolutionary clothing try-on feature. Users can interact with a smart algorithm that selects the perfect digital model based on a selfie. Try on clothes by simply clicking on the body part you want to explore, making it easy and intuitive.

360-degree views

TokMode introduces the ability to view clothing items from all angles, offering a 360-degree perspective. Say goodbye to static images and hello to an interactive shopping experience.

Personalized content

TokMode goes a step further by personalizing the content based on the user’s interests and viewing habits. If you’re a frequent browser of pants or jeans, the platform will prioritize showing you more outfits featuring these items.

Benefits for businesses

Complete outfits

TokMode empowers customers to assemble complete outfits instead of just buying individual items. This shift has the potential to significantly increase the average purchase value.
A clothing retailer could use TokMode to create outfits that showcase their complementary products. For example, they could create an outfit that includes a dress, shoes, a handbag, and a pair of earrings. This would make it easy for customers to purchase a complete outfit, rather than just individual items.

Informed purchasing decisions

Unlike traditional eCommerce, where recommendations are solely based on preferences, TokMode allows users to see how products might look on them, forging a deeper connection with potential purchases.

For example, a customer might be hesitant to buy a new pair of jeans without trying them on first. TokMode’s virtual try-on feature allows customers to see how the jeans would look on their own body, which can give them the confidence to make a purchase.

The AI advantage

AI-powered avatars

AI-powered avatars are about to change the way we shop online. By using artificial intelligence to create digital representations of ourselves, avatars can offer a more immersive and personalized shopping experience.

One of the coolest things about AI-powered avatars is that they can try on clothes for you virtually. Just take a selfie and let a smart algorithm choose a digital avatar that matches your body type and features. Once you have an avatar, you can browse and try on clothes from different brands and retailers without having to step foot in a dressing room.

In addition to making it easier to try on clothes, AI-powered avatars can also make shopping more engaging. For example, some avatars let you adjust your body shape and size so you can see how different clothes would look on you.

Conclusion

TokMode has the potential to benefit both businesses and consumers. Businesses can use this feature to increase sales by creating complete outfits and allowing customers to see how products might look on them before they buy. Consumers can use it to make informed purchasing decisions and save time and money.

TokMode feature is still a prototype, but it has the potential to revolutionize the online shopping industry. With its innovative use of AI and social media, this functionality is poised to become the go-to destination for fashion-forward shoppers.
